The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We have been lots of activities based on the book ...

We have been making caterpillars from pom poms ...

and from beads ...

We have made a hungry caterpillar of our own so that the children can sort and feed him all the things that he eats...

We have even got our very own caterpillars. We have five that we are watching grow and will hopefully turn into butterflies.

Day 1- the children were introduced to the caterpillars, we talked about the book 'the very hungry caterpillar' and what happens in the story. The children all had a look at the tiny caterpillars through the pot.

Day 2- The caterpillars have almost doubled in size since yesterday! We can see little holes where the caterpillars have been eating the food and they have made some web.

Day 3 and 4- The weekend.

Day 5- the caterpillars have grown loads over the weekend. We have noticed that they have shed some of their exoskeleton and we talked about this with some of the children. There is lots more webbing inside the cup now.

Day 6- the caterpillars are growing so big, today they have been climbing up to the top of the cup quite a bit and have been pooing alot! Could this be a sign that they will be turning into chrysilists soon?

Day 7- the cup is becoming more full each day with the caterpillars web and waste. They have eaten all the food down to the bottom of the cup on one side now. They are spending more and more time on the lid of the cup and we have also noticed that the caterpillars are going lighter in colour.

I am sure you all know the story but if you don't or want to watch it with your children at home then here it is on video...
